Have we become the indoor generation?

Our homes are so comfortable that we tend to spend a lot of our free time indoors.  So logically, the quality of the air in our home can have a significant impact on our health.  Dust and allergens from the outside can live in duct work, under furniture and on light fixtures.  Any high water use areas like the kitchen, bathrooms and laundry room, or poorly ventilated or damp areas like basements and crawl spaces are the most likely to promote the growth of mold.

Health Problems Associated with Poor Indoor Air Quality:

1.       Allergies and breathing problems can occur or worsen existing conditions

2.       Asthma has a much higher likelihood of occurring in homes with mold

3.       Chronic fatigue, insomnia, and even depression can be linked to indoor air quality

4.       Headaches and sinus infections

5.       Irritated eyes and skin

So What Should You Do?  Ways to Improve the Indoor Air Quality of Your Home

To begin with, let some fresh air in by opening doors and windows.  Dust and vacuum regularly to remove particles in the carpets, furniture and on the surfaces.  Keep pets well groomed.  Turn on the fans in bathrooms when showering and make sure that areas like crawl spaces are properly ventilated. Have a qualified contractor clean the duct work and the dryer vent.

When it comes to mold, it often requires a specialist.  Certainly, if there is a damp area or a water leak, it is likely that mold is there.  A qualified mold inspection will reveal whether or not you have active mold growth and if there are mold spores in the air that you are breathing.  A certified mold inspection specialist collects air samples,  has them analyzed, and then makes recommendations to remedy the problem if you have one.

Health and wellness have become a priority for many these days, and we are choosing healthy options for the food we eat and the water we drink.  Indoor air quality awareness, however, is not as mainstream, but can have an equally significant impact on our well-being and that of our families, especially children.
