Can Mold Cause Headaches?

Mold growth can often occur behind the walls, in the ceiling, under the floors or carpet and around windows.  The reason is because water leaks occur in these areas and are not always visible.  Even if a leak occurs that floods the carpet or stains the ceiling, once it is cleaned up, we generally don’t think about it anymore.

Well, what if I told you that the moisture that remains from any type of water leak is the perfect breeding ground for mold growth.  The spores that are naturally occurring in the air gravitate to water and moisture.  Even if it dries out, re-introduction of moisture such as a rainstorm, the bathroom shower, or a big pot of boiling water on the stove could be enough to re-activate the mold growth.

When mold goes undetected for a period of time, it can cause some serious health problems depending on the level of spores that are polluting the air.   Clearly, people with asthma or other allergies, or those with compromised immune systems are most likely to notice the symptoms soonest.  Children and older adults are also more susceptible to problems, but there are health issues that would not seem to be a common result of contaminated indoor air, such as headaches.  The truth is that not only does the high concentration of spores enter your lungs, it also goes up into your sinuses which may show up as headaches, fatigue, and ear, nose and throat irritation and pain.

So, what is the best way to find out if you may have a mold problem in your home or office?

Look for these signs:

  1. Does the headache lessen when you are out of the home?
  2. Note the level of your energy when you are indoors and then go out.
  3. Is there a room or area of the house where you notice the symptoms more often?
  4. Have you had a leak recently or know of one that occurred before you moved in?
  5. Are there areas of the house that are  damp or have a musty smell?
